The Checkered Rattlesnake Orchid [Goodyera tesselata] that I was fortunate to find in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania last in year in August after blooming had occured. Found in a red pine forest plantation [mixed with other pines], that was planted many years ago, was scheduled to be timbered. On gamelands, the site was reported to the state and who sent in botanist who confirmed the find, had the timbering halted due to these plants being there. After waiting a year they are now blooming and like all G. tesselata that I have ever seen from Tioga County, Pa. to Northern New Hampshire, the flowers have a beautiful pinkish hue. Hunderds of plant are to be found in this special area, some vegetative, but many are in bloom. Perhaps the most southerly of this beautiful orchid to occur in Pennsylvania. A year of waiting, it was well worth it! 6-30-26

These three pictures show three different and distinct Goodyera species. Concentrating on the inside of the flower and showing the columns [anther caps and pollinia]. Far left Goodyera tesselata. Middle, Goodyera repens. Right, Goodyera pubescens. Notice difference in the lips of each species, the G. repens has a longer more narrow lip than either G. tesselata or G. pubescens. Also notice the pinkish hue of the G. tesselata's inflorescence [flowers] that is absent from both G. repens and G. pubescens, this is something that I have observed in G. tesselata in both Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.

An exciting find in Lebanon County, Pa. Checkered Rattlesnake Orchid [Goodyera tesselata]. I can find no records for this plant in Lebanon County or even this part of the state of Pennsylvania [central]. 8-21-25
