All that is left after the flower has fallen off from this American Pennyroyal [Hedeoma pulegioides] is called the receptacle, now containing seeds for the next generation as it is an annual. Seeds can now be found the pouch at the end of the dried tubular receptacle. Looking closely you can see tiny droplets that are the oil glands full of aromatic chemicals, that give this plant its wonderful fragrance. Dauphin County, Pa. 10-28-24

American Chestnut [Castanea dentata]. Dauphin County, Pa. 10-3-24. This tree is the largest American Chestnut that I am aware of, and it certainly has battled the chestnut blight over the years, but it still survives and fights on. Every year it seems to have an abundance of burrs and this year is no exception, but the nuts inside are never very big as seen in one of the pictures.

Lest you think that invasive plants don't do much harm or count for much, this area once held a large population of American Pennyroyal, hundreds if not thousands of plants. Now all that remains is this one lone solitary plant as it struggles against a sea of Japanese stilt Grass. Dauphin County, Pa.
